The Protector of Citizens, on his own initiative, after learning from the media that a man killed his ex intimate partner with a gun in the town square in Pirot, launched a control investigation into the legality and regularity of work of the Ministry of Interior – Pirot Police Department and the Centre for Social Work in that city.
The Protector of Citizens asked the Pirot police to inform him within 15 days about all the circumstances of this case, especially whether there were previous reports of violence by the perpetrator towards the victim, what measures the police undertook, in cooperation with other competent authorities, in order to protect the victim of intimate partner violence and sanction the perpetrator, as well as whether the perpetrator had a weapon in legal possession.
The Protector of Citizens asked the Centre for Social Work Pirot to provide him with information about this case within the same time frame, including information on whether the perpetrator and the victim were on the centre's records, whether there were previous reports of violence in partner relations, and if this is the case, which measures did the Centre undertake in cooperation with other competent authorities in order to provide support to the victim of violence in the partner relation, to protect her, to sanction the perpetrator and to influence him not to commit violence anymore.
